"Transfigured Lives: Women's Films of Empowerment" Series:
Antonia's Line
Often, films which win the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film do not deserve the honor. This film deserves all of its awards and has become an international favorite. It depicts the lives of a mother and a daughter as well as their friends over a 40-year period and is a testament to the remarkable strength and endurance of women. It has flashes of magic as well as some very serious, substantive issues presented thoughtfully as well as memorably. A delight! [Marleen Gorris, Holland, 1996]
Time: 7:00 p.m.

"Transfigured Lives: Women's Films of Empowerment" Series:
Moolaadé
This is a very important film made by Africa's greatest filmmaker. Sembene tells the story of a group of women who risk everything to oppose the ingrained, Islam-approved tradition of forced genital mutilation of all young girls to lessen their sexual pleasure. The film is not a polemic, but it is political and the women who fight are incredible! [Ousmane Sembene, Senegal, 2004]

"Transfigured Lives: Women's Films of Empowerment" Series:
Once Were Warriors
Perhaps the most difficult film in our series, this exceptional film deals with a Maori family that is characterized by consistent domestic violence caused by both alcohol use and ingrained acceptance within the culture. The opposition to this consistent and sometimes hard-to-watch violence is transformative for both the family as well as the audience watching the film. It should be emphasized that this is a fairly crude film; its lack of Hollywood slickness makes it much more effective; its director and major crewmembers are female. A remarkable viewing experience. [Lee Tamahori, 1994, New Zealand]
Time: 7:00 p.m.
Location: The Painter's Daughter Art Gallery
Reservations recommended: 352 735 3470

The Story of Qui Ju
Those who are used to seeing the beautiful Gong Li exquisitely costumed and heavily made-up will be surprised at her plain and feisty characterization of a pregnant woman who is determined to oppose the Chinese bureaucracy to get the justice that she believes her husband deserves for being kicked in the groin by the local village chief. She is absolutely relentless in opposing the system: one powerless woman who chooses to persist until she wins. The film is convincing and wonderfully acted! [Yimou Zhang, China, 1993]
